SUMMARY:2024 Hargrove Colloquium: Media Law in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exploration of the legal landscape surrounding media and artificial intelligence as we navigate the complexities of this rapidly evolving field. Come hear from David McCraw\, Deputy General Counsel at The New York Times\, and a panel of experts who will discuss the impact of generative AI on copyright law\, defamation law\, political communication\, and journalism. We’ll tackle such questions as who owns the creative output generated by AI? Who\, if anyone\, can be held liable for harmful or defamatory content that AI generates? What are the potential risks and safeguards around AI-powered misinformation and voter manipulation? How is AI transforming the news industry? \nWhether you’re a lawyer\, journalist\, media executive\, or simply curious about the intersection of AI and media\, we hope that you will join us for this thought-provoking exploration of Media Law in the Age of Artificial Intelligence. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:How Our Bankruptcy System Makes America More Unequal | Unjust Debts | Lunch and Learn with Melissa B. Jacoby
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a free lunch and learn as the Carolina Law community celebrates the release of Graham Kenan Professor of Law Melissa B. Jacoby’s new book\, Unjust Debts | How Our Bankruptcy System Makes America More Unequal. \nThe bankruptcy system exists to cancel or restructure debts for people and companies that have way too many—a safety valve designed to provide a mechanism for restarting lives and businesses when things go wrong financially. Unjust Debts explores how bankruptcy contributes to race\, gender\, and class inequality in America. Across a broad range of crucial issues\, Unjust Debts reveals the hidden mechanisms by which bankruptcy impacts everything from sexual harassment to health care\, police violence to employment discrimination\, and the opioid crisis to gun violence. \nA free lunch will be provided. RSVP by June 13 at 5 p.m. \nQuestions about this event? Please contact Kelly Mann Rose\, assistant director of alumni and donor relations\, at mann@unc.edu.
