DESCRIPTION:Within the last two decades\, major shocks such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks\, the global financial crisis\, and the COVID-19 pandemic have fueled and complicated the use and effectiveness of the American bankruptcy system. \nJoin UNC School of Law’s New York City Alumni Regional Club and Melissa B. Jacoby\, Graham Kenan Professor of Law\, for Beyond the Headlines: Bankruptcy in the Shadow of COVID-19 (sponsored by Greenberg Traurig\, LLP)\, where you will explore how a shock like each of these events intersects with bankruptcy use in a variety of contexts. \nThis presentation is of interest to lawyers specializing in other areas because it will highlight how restructuring professionals and other repeat players in the bankruptcy system use crises like the pandemic to advance expansive and “off-label” uses of bankruptcy that affect legal and policy issues far beyond its intended domain. \nApproval pending for one hour of CLE credit for attending this event. \nQuestions about this event? SUMMARY:North Carolina Law Review Symposium: Apprendi at 20
DESCRIPTION:The North Carolina Law Review presents “Apprendi at 20.” \nIn Apprendi v. New Jersey\, the U.S. Supreme Court recognized the right to have aggravating sentencing factors found by a jury. The decision created a new Sixth Amendment sentencing doctrine\, disrupting decades of sentencing reform in Congress and in the states. This symposium will discuss the impacts of Apprendi\, twenty years later. \nAttorneys may self-file for CLE credit for attending the symposium. The symposium will be a two-hour online event\, which may qualify for two hours of CLE credit in North Carolina\, if approved. The speaker biographies and summaries of what they will be discussing at the symposium will be posted in the coming weeks. This information may be used to self-file with the North Carolina State Bar.

Nelson Young Tax Institute is an annual professional program covering current state and federal tax problems and issues at the post-graduate level of knowledge. The program is designed for the practitioner who must frequently handle state and federal tax matters. Emphasis is placed on subjects that are new and current\, including in-depth coverage of recent developments and problems that often prove difficult in planning clients’ affairs and transactions. The conference will feature discussions on current issues in individual and business income taxation\, professional regulatory ethics and in estate planning. The learning objectives for this program is to expand the practitioners understanding of state and federal taxation policy\, regulation and real-world application. There are no prerequisites or advanced preparation for this group-live conference. The speakers are tax practitioners and scholars from throughout the country who have been selected for their technical expertise and speaking ability.
