The panel will be moderated by Kim Crouch\, executive director of NC Advocates for Justice\, the bar association for plaintiff’s attorneys in North Carolina. Our panelists represent different practice settings and areas: \n\nFred Baker is a partner with Motley Rice\, one of the largest plaintiff’s firms in the country with over 100 attorneys. Fred’s practice involves consumer fraud protection and securities class actions.\nBen Burnside is an attorney with Deuterman Law Group\, a plaintiff’s firm of eleven attorneys with offices in Greensboro and Winston-Salem. Ben focuses his practice on obtaining the Social Security and VA disability benefits his clients deserve.\nChris Stevens is also an attorney with Deuterman Law Group. Academics and others with knowledge of country conditions\, and medical and mental health professionals can harness their expertise to support asylum-seekers fleeing harm. \nThis training is designed to provide members of the academic community\, professionals\, and others with specialized knowledge with an overview of the purposes served by experts in these cases. Expert witnesses and immigration attorneys will explain the uses of expert evidence in asylum claims\, offer practical advice on providing written and oral testimony\, and engage in a discussion on the collaboration between attorneys and experts. We plan to reschedule this event sometime during the fall of 2020.\nRoom 5052 \nJoin Judge Emin Toro ’00\, of the United States Tax Court\, for a lunchtime conversation about his career path and work. Judge Toro joined the Tax Court as a presidential appointee and was confirmed in 2019. He was formerly a partner in the Washington\, DC\, office of Covington & Burling LLP where his practice focused on the needs of multinational companies\, including both tax controversies and counseling. Judge Toro’s experience includes audits\, administrative appeals\, litigation and transfer pricing matters. He received his JD from Carolina Law in 2000 and clerked for the Honorable Karen LeCraft Henderson\, US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia (2000–2001) and the Honorable Clarence Thomas\, US Supreme Court (2002–2003). This event is hosted by Professor Joni Walser ’86 and open to all law students.

DESCRIPTION:Researchers and advocates have had to re-examine the usual responses to domestic violence that rely on the criminal legal system amidst social distancing and stay-at-home orders. Studies show that domestic violence is interrelated with other social issues\, particularly social inequality and economic uncertainty. Professor Deborah Weissman\, Reef C.
