SUMMARY:Law & Literature: Online Alumni Book Club with Professor Patricia Bryan
DESCRIPTION:Join Professor Patricia Bryan in reading the 2020 Pulitzer Prize winning novel\, The Nickel Boys\, by Colson Whitehead. This book spans the period from the 1960’s—after the Supreme Court decided Brown vs. Board of Education—until the present day. Based on a true story\, this novel reminds us that the past cannot be erased and that changes in the law will not be enough to end discrimination and racial injustice. Styled in the model of Professor Bryan’s popular Law & Literature class at Carolina Law\, alumni are invited to take part in a thoughtful conversation about the important themes in this book. \nA link to join us for the virtual event will be sent out via email prior to the webinar.

SUMMARY:Constitution Day: "Bush v Gore at 20: The Case That Decided the Presidency"
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, UNC School of Law organizes the campus-wide Constitution Day celebration to commemorate September 17\, the day on which the Constitution of the United States was signed. Gore (2000) case and is currently serving as general counsel at The Home Depot. Dean Mary-Rose Papandrea will moderate.

SUMMARY:North Carolina Law Review Symposium: Apprendi at 20
DESCRIPTION:The North Carolina Law Review presents “Apprendi at 20.” \nIn Apprendi v. New Jersey\, the U.S. Supreme Court recognized the right to have aggravating sentencing factors found by a jury. The decision created a new Sixth Amendment sentencing doctrine\, disrupting decades of sentencing reform in Congress and in the states. This symposium will discuss the impacts of Apprendi\, twenty years later. \nAttorneys may self-file for CLE credit for attending the symposium. The symposium will be a two-hour online event\, which may qualify for two hours of CLE credit in North Carolina\, if approved. The speaker biographies and summaries of what they will be discussing at the symposium will be posted in the coming weeks. This information may be used to self-file with the North Carolina State Bar.
