SUMMARY:North Carolina Law Review Symposium: Apprendi at 20
DESCRIPTION:The North Carolina Law Review presents “Apprendi at 20.” \nIn Apprendi v. New Jersey\, the U.S. Supreme Court recognized the right to have aggravating sentencing factors found by a jury. The decision created a new Sixth Amendment sentencing doctrine\, disrupting decades of sentencing reform in Congress and in the states. This symposium will discuss the impacts of Apprendi\, twenty years later. \nAttorneys may self-file for CLE credit for attending the symposium. The symposium will be a two-hour online event\, which may qualify for two hours of CLE credit in North Carolina\, if approved. The speaker biographies and summaries of what they will be discussing at the symposium will be posted in the coming weeks. This information may be used to self-file with the North Carolina State Bar.

SUMMARY:Law & Literature: Alumni Book Club with Professor Patricia Bryan
DESCRIPTION:Alumni are invited to join Professor Patricia Bryan in reading The Round House by Louise Erdrich. \nProfessor Bryan’s pick for this virtual book club in September — The Round House — transports readers to the Ojibwe reservation in North Dakota. SUMMARY:Rethinking Responses to Domestic Violence in the Time of COVID-19: Professor Deborah Weissman
DESCRIPTION:Researchers and advocates have had to re-examine the usual responses to domestic violence that rely on the criminal legal system amidst social distancing and stay-at-home orders. Studies show that domestic violence is interrelated with other social issues\, particularly social inequality and economic uncertainty. Professor Deborah Weissman\, Reef C. Ivey II Distinguished Professor of Law\, will examine the efficacy of legal and policy responses to domestic violence\, financial consequences of abuse suffered by survivors\, and the intervention modalities aimed at those who have harmed on Wednesday\, July 15. \nThis is the second of a three-part faculty webinar series\, Law in the Time of COVID-19.

SUMMARY:Law & Literature: Online Alumni Book Club with Professor Patricia Bryan
DESCRIPTION:Join Professor Patricia Bryan in reading the 2020 Pulitzer Prize winning novel\, The Nickel Boys\, by Colson Whitehead. This book spans the period from the 1960’s—after the Supreme Court decided Brown vs. Board of Education—until the present day. Based on a true story\, this novel reminds us that the past cannot be erased and that changes in the law will not be enough to end discrimination and racial injustice. Styled in the model of Professor Bryan’s popular Law & Literature class at Carolina Law\, alumni are invited to take part in a thoughtful conversation about the important themes in this book. \nA link to join us for the virtual event will be sent out via email prior to the webinar.
