Biography

John R. Owen joined the law faculty in 2020 and is an Adjunct Professor of Law. He taught Patent Law in 2020, and presently instructs with the Intellectual Property Clinic as part of the Institute for Innovation. After graduating from Duke University with an engineering degree, Owen worked in engineering and manufacturing management for 10 years before returning to school to pursue a law degree at the University of North Carolina. Upon graduation, he joined Coats & Bennett, PLLC, an intellectual property boutique firm in Cary, NC, as a patent attorney. Owen is still practicing with Coats & Bennett, where he focuses on patent prosecution and opinions, trademarks, and copyrights.
