Biography

Joseph Laizure is the staff attorney in the Clinical Programs. He represents clients of the clinic in court when students and faculty are not in session. He works with referral partners around the state to identify new cases for law students, develops training materials, and involves students in pro bono projects. Joseph began his career as an attorney at Legal Aid of North Carolina, where he represented clients in expunctions and certificates of relief, wills and advance directives, domestic violence, housing, and unemployment benefits appeals. He served on the leadership team for the UNC Cancer Pro Bono Project and led the expunction work for the Durham Expunction and Restoration (DEAR) Program, which received the North Carolina Bar Association’s Outstanding Collaborative Pro Bono Award in 2019.
