SUMMARY:Artificial Intelligence Conversation with USC Annenberg's Dr. Kate Crawford
DESCRIPTION:Law students\, faculty\, staff and community members interested in artificial intelligence are invited to attend a discussion with author Dr. Kate Crawford. \nCrawford will share a preview of her new book Atlas of AI: Power\, Politics\, and the Planetary Costs of Artificial Intelligence\, published by Yale in April 2021. Atlas of AI explores the historical origins\, labor practices\, infrastructures\, and epistemological assumptions that underlie the contemporary artificial intelligence. Rather than taking a narrow focus on code and algorithms\, Crawford offers a political and a material perspective of how AI is “made:” from lithium mines in Nevada\, to the exploited workers behind “automated” systems\, to the regimes of classification in training data. This talk outlines how AI functions as a registry of power\, which has only amplified during the pandemic at a time of deepening inequality around the world. \nThis event\, hosted UNC School of Law’s AI Decision-Making Research Program (AI-DR) is free and open to the public. \nAbout Kate Crawford \nDr. Kate Crawford is a leading scholar of the social and political implications of artificial intelligence. Her work focuses on understanding large-scale data systems\, machine learning and AI in the wider contexts of history\, politics\, labor\, and the environment. She is a Research Professor of Communication and STS at USC Annenberg\, a Senior Principal Researcher at MSR-NYC\, and the inaugural Visiting Chair for AI and Justice at the École Normale Supérieure. Her academic research has been published in journals such as Nature\, New Media & Society\, Science\, Technology & Human Values and Information\, Communication & Society. Crawford’s work also includes collaborative projects and visual investigations. Her project Anatomy of an AI System with Vladan Joler – which maps the full lifecycle of the Amazon Echo– won the Beazley Design of the Year Award in 2019\, and is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Her collaboration with the artist Trevor Paglen\, Excavating AI\, won the Ayrton Prize from the British Society for the History of Science. Crawford’s latest book\, Atlas of AI: Power\, Politics\, and the Planetary Costs of Artificial Intelligence is published by Yale University Press in 2021.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Headlines: Bankruptcy in the Shadow of COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:Within the last two decades\, major shocks such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks\, the global financial crisis\, and the COVID-19 pandemic have fueled and complicated the use and effectiveness of the American bankruptcy system. \nJoin UNC School of Law’s New York City Alumni Regional Club and Melissa B. Jacoby\, Graham Kenan Professor of Law\, for Beyond the Headlines: Bankruptcy in the Shadow of COVID-19 (sponsored by Greenberg Traurig\, LLP)\, where you will explore how a shock like each of these events intersects with bankruptcy use in a variety of contexts. \nThis presentation is of interest to lawyers specializing in other areas because it will highlight how restructuring professionals and other repeat players in the bankruptcy system use crises like the pandemic to advance expansive and “off-label” uses of bankruptcy that affect legal and policy issues far beyond its intended domain. \nApproval pending for one hour of CLE credit for attending this event. \nQuestions about this event? Please contact Kelly Mann Rose (assistant director of alumni and donor relations) at mann@unc.edu.

SUMMARY:Technology\, Inclusiveness\, Structural Racism\, and Silicon Valley
DESCRIPTION:The UNC Center for Civil Rights; UNC Center for Media Law and Policy; UNC Center for Information\, Technology\, and Public Life; and Common Sense Media will host a panel discussion on “Technology\, Inclusiveness\, Structural Racism\, and Silicon Valley.” \nWe are at a crossroads. Our lives and entire society have been transformed by a technology revolution and its 24/7 influence on so many aspects of our reality. But even as we rely on technology for connection and collaboration\, we’re also feeling the negative impacts of its deep roots into our lives\, our culture\, and our beliefs. Nowhere is that impact felt more keenly than in the systemic problems of racial justice and inequality in our society. As we begin to truly do the work as a society to unravel these threads\, we also see how technology has been wielded as a tool to reinforce unjust and inequitable systems and norms. It has been used maliciously to disenfranchise Black voters\, to create “e-carceration” systems that prevent those out of prison from ever truly gaining access to jobs and opportunities\, to fuel the rampant distribution of racist and hateful content across their platforms\, all while systematically denying children in Black and low-income neighborhoods access to the devices and connection speeds they need to succeed in school and beyond. And all of this has happened under the watch of technology leadership that lacks the diversity of Black and Brown faces\, and downplays their complacency. This timely panel will explore how the major tech companies will inevitably be judged by their impact\, for better or worse\, on racial justice and inequality in America\, and what steps we need to take to create a more equitable future. \nPanelists include: \n\nAmelia Gibson\, Assistant Professor\, UNC School of Information and Library Science\nRachel Kuo\, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Center for Information\, Technology\, and Public Life\nTed Shaw\, Julius L. Chambers Distinguished Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Civil Rights\, UNC School of Law\nJim Steyer\, CEO/ founder of Common Sense Media and editor of Which Side of History? How Technology is Reshaping Democracy and Our Lives\,\nFrancesca Tripodi\, Assistant Professor\, UNC School of Information and Library Science; Senior Faculty Researcher\, Center for Information\, Technology\, and Public Life\nmoderator: David Ardia\, Associate Professor of Law\, UNC School of Law and Faculty Co-Director of the UNC Center for Media Law and Policy\n\nThe event will be held on Zoom and will be open to the public.

SUMMARY:Watch: Private Money in Prosecutor Elections: the Pros\, the Cons\, and the Facts
DESCRIPTION:Watch now: Play a recording of this panel discussion \n\nThe Prosecutors and Politics Project will host a lunchtime conversation and share the results of the first national study of campaign contributions in prosecutor elections. Attendees will also hear from experts about the promise and the peril of private financing in prosecutor campaigns. \nPanelists: \nJessica Brand\, Wren Collective\nJessica Brand is the founder of the Wren Collective\, which provides research\, policy\, and communications support to those who are trying to shrink the criminal legal system and implement policies that actually help communities thrive. She has helped run numerous political campaigns\, including the successful Larry Krasner and Kim Gardner reelections\, and works with progressive prosecutors across the country. “The Wreners” also advise grassroots and grasstop groups\, athletes\, and artists on their advocacy work. Previously\, Jessica was the legal director at The Justice Collaborative\, an attorney at the Texas Defender Service\, and an appellate attorney at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia. Jessica has trained attorneys on forensic and mental health issues across the country. \nCiara Torres-Spelliscy\, Brennan Center Fellow\nCiara Torres-Spelliscy is a professor at Stetson University’s College of Law teaching courses in Election Law\, Corporate Governance\, Business Entities\, and Constitutional Law. She was an associate at Arnold & Porter LLP and a staffer for Senator Richard Durbin. She is the author of the books Corporate Citizen (2016) and Political Brands (2019). \nWhitney Tymas\, Justice & Public Safety PAC\nWhitney Tymas is an attorney with over 30 years of experience in criminal law. She has led initiatives to promote fairness and accountability and has taught and presented widely across the nation. Whitney advises individuals\, organizations and political action committees\, such as Justice & Public Safety PAC\, Justice & Public Safety Action Fund and others\, about justice policy and strategy. In 2015\, Whitney launched a national initiative focused on electing progressive local prosecutors\, committed to equity and public safety. Since then\, she has overseen almost fifty campaigns in prosecutor races across the country. Before this\, Whitney served as director of the Prosecution and Racial Justice Program at the Vera Institute of Justice. This groundbreaking national program identified and sought to remedy patterns of racial injustice and ethnic disparity caused by prosecutors. Beginning in New York City as a public defender with the Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem\, Whitney also practiced law at the Office of the Appellate Defender\, the Legal Aid Society Criminal Appeals Bureau\, as a prosecutor in Virginia\, and in private practice as a defense and civil rights attorney. Whitney has practiced in state and federal courts\, at the trial and appellate levels\, handling a wide range of criminal cases\, from misdemeanors to multiple defendant homicides. Whitney is a graduate of Barnard College and New York University School of Law\, where she was a Root-Tilden-Snow Scholar. She was born in Washington\, DC\, came to adulthood in Harlem\, and has devoted her life to public service and social justice. \n
