The Externship Program application process for the three and six credit programs requires students to:
- Apply through the clinic/externship lottery each February for a space in the program during the fall or spring semester
- Meet with a faculty supervisor prior to applying to specific sites to strategize applications to up to four of our externship partner sites
All applications are then sent to our externship site supervisors for review and determination as to which students are interviewed and ultimately selected for an externship. Applications are sent out in mid-October for spring externships and mid-March for students externing during the following fall semester. Please note that students do not set up their own externships.
The Externship Program application process for the six week summer session requires students to:
- Register with Melissa to attend the Summer Externship meeting in January.
- Meet with faculty supervisor to discuss site applications.
Summer applications are sent out beginning in January. The summer program is 4 pass/fail credit hours.
There are no mandatory course requirements for enrolling in the three, six, or four credit Externship Program; however, individual externship placement sites may specify prerequisites.
The Externship Program application process for the 12 credit Semester In Practice program requires students to:
- Have a GPA of at least 3.2
- Meet with a faculty member in the Externship Program to discuss sites and review your resume before applying
- Provide the name a law school professor who can attest to your classwork in your area of interest
- Complete any online application requirements should you apply to a federal government site
The Semester in Practice is not lottery based, and applications go out to sites beginning in February. This program is open to students in the spring of their 2L year or the fall of their 3L year only.
Students participating in the any of the Externship Programs receive pass/fail academic credit for externing with one of the program’s approved partner sites, as well as completing all academic course requirements with their faculty supervisor at the law school. Students may take up to 18 externship credits during their law school career.
