Application Process and Course Requirements

The Externship Program application process for the three-, six-, and four-credit programs requires students to:

  • Apply through the lottery for a space in the program
  • Meet with a faculty supervisor prior to applying to specific sites to strategize applications to up to four of our externship partner sites

All applications are then sent to our externship site supervisors for review and determination as to which students are interviewed and ultimately selected for an externship. Applications are sent out in mid-October for spring externships and mid-March for students externing during the following fall semester. Summer applications are sent out at the end of January.

There are no mandatory course requirements for enrolling in the Externship Program; however, individual externship placement sites may specify prerequisites.

Students participating in the Externship Program receive pass/fail academic credit for externing with one of the program’s approved partner sites, as well as completing all course requirements with their faculty supervisor at the law school.
