UNC School of Law Achieves 92.97% Bar Passage Rate for First-Time Test Takers

According to results released by the North Carolina Board of Law Examiners, the University of North Carolina School of Law continues its tradition of excellence in bar exam performance, with 92.97% of first-time test takers passing the July 2024 North Carolina bar examination.

Of the 128 Carolina Law graduates taking the bar exam for the first time, 119 successfully passed. This impressive pass rate surpasses the state’s overall first-time taker passage rate of 80.85% by more than 12 percentage points.

Carolina Law’s overall passage rate, including both first-time and repeat takers, stands at 92.37%– a notable increase from last year’s 90.08% and exceeding the state’s overall rate of 73.81% by more than 18 percentage points.

O.J. Salinas, director of the Academic Excellence Program and clinical professor at Carolina Law, commended the graduates:

“The Class of 2024 did an amazing job on the North Carolina bar exam! This is the third straight year that UNC’s July bar passage rate for first-time test takers is over 92%. Our graduates continue to perform at the highest standards, and the law school’s Academic Excellence Program continuously seeks ways to support our students from pre-orientation through the bar exam.”

The Academic Excellence Program offers comprehensive support throughout students’ law school journey. For second and third-year students, the nationally recognized Bar Success Program provides targeted exam preparation through Applied Legal Concepts courses, online resources, workshops, individualized feedback, and one-on-one coaching. Building on support offered from the first year, these initiatives equip students with the tools necessary to excel in their legal studies and achieve success on the bar exam.
