HLLSA Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with Vibrant Events and Collaborations

October 14, 2024

The Hispanic Latino Law Student Association (HLLSA) at UNC School of Law has transformed Hispanic Heritage Month into a vibrant showcase of community, culture, and career development. With a mission focused on enhancing members’ legal careers, increasing Hispanic-Latino representation, and serving the local community, HLLSA has organized a series of engaging events and collaborations.

Sabrina Callahan, a 2L and co-president of HLLSA, emphasized the group’s strong sense of community, stating:

“Even though there aren’t many Hispanic Latin students on campus, we have a very close-knit group. We all care for each other, and it’s nice to have that safe space while raising awareness about the Latin community.”

The month-long celebration kicked off with a popular food truck event sponsored by Troutman Pepper, setting the tone for a varied range of activities. HLLSA members then participated in a community conversation panel, addressing issues relevant to Hispanic and Latino law students. In collaboration with the Transactional and Corporate Law Association, they hosted a panel on summer associate experiences, offering valuable insights for aspiring lawyers. To conclude the month, HLLSA is planning a special dinner with Alston & Bird, building on the success of last year’s event.

This year has seen HLLSA forge new partnerships with other campus affinity groups. One notable ongoing initiative, led by the Black Law Students Association president Aleah Wordsworth 2L, involves a drive to support Western North Carolina residents affected by Hurricane Helene

Looking ahead to the coming semester, HLLSA is joining forces with other student groups to organize an event featuring professors and local attorneys, aiming to provide guidance on navigating the legal profession and address concerns shared by diverse law students.

Their dedication to celebrating Hispanic and Latino culture while fostering a supportive community among law students continues to enhance the experience of Hispanic and Latino students at UNC School of Law, and through their ongoing efforts, HLLSA is making a positive impact on the wider academic environment, promoting inclusivity and professional growth for all.
