Carolina Student Named Peggy Browning Fellow

December 8, 2024

Emily Kaplan, a second-year student at the University of North Carolina School of Law, will turn personal experience into professional impact as a 2025 Peggy Browning Fellow at Murphy Anderson PLLC, a leading union-side labor law firm in Washington, D.C.

“I first decided to go to law school to help fight for workers’ rights after serving on my union’s bargaining committee,” Kaplan said. “Bargaining our contract showed me the profound impact that the collective power of workers can have on a workplace.”

At Murphy Anderson, Kaplan will focus on cases involving union representation, worker organization and wage-and-hour litigation. The Peggy Browning Fellowship program selects law students nationwide who demonstrate academic excellence and dedication to advancing workers’ rights.

“This fellowship represents a remarkable achievement that aligns perfectly with our commitment to public interest law,” said Senior Director of Student Engagement Kaitlyn Parker of the Career Development Office. “Emily’s selection highlights both her exceptional abilities and our school’s dedication to advancing workers’ rights.”

“I am committed to working within the labor movement because the work involves more than just advocating for one client,” Kaplan said. “It also involves building a strong movement for all workers everywhere. I am thrilled to get to contribute to the critical work that Murphy Anderson does within the labor movement.”
