Rebecca Barraclough Howell

Director of International Programs and Special Projects

Biography

I manage the law school’s exchange and study abroad programs. I provide assistance to enrolled international J.D. students and I plan events and opportunities for global learning and perspectives to be shared among students, faculty, and staff. I am also working to restructure and reinstate the Visiting Scholars and LL.M. programs. I earned my J.D. in 2020, spending my summers working with the Orange County Drug Recovery Court and the Wake County Public Defender’s Office. I spent more than 150 hours engaged in pro bono work, spending much of my time in the UNC Cancer Clinic and working on driver’s license restoration and expungements for the DEAR program. Prior to moving to Chapel Hill, I dedicated my first career to working with first generation and second chance students. I was the Director of Student Advising and Support Services at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College for five years after serving as an advisor and Coordinator of the Service Center. I dedicated my efforts to creating an invitational atmosphere for all students and provided training to other schools both on how to create a welcoming office environment for DACA and undocumented students as well as how to design a thoughtful and trauma-informed process for handling the unexpected deaths of students. I was actively engaged in two SACS reaccreditation reviews at A-B Tech and served as a QEP Evaluator in Tennessee in 2015.
