Carolina Law Celebrates Tax Day
April 21, 2025
The Rotunda pulsed with excitement today as tax students, faculty, and staff members gathered for UNC School of Law’s Tax Day Celebration, where the #18 nationally ranked tax program turned education into an engaging community experience.
Students tackled a series of tax-themed games that made complex concepts come alive. The event kicked off with tax bingo featuring technical clues like “the Achilles heel of the income tax system.” Next came the “tax challenge,” where students solved problems that led them to faculty offices, with winners racing back with professors in tow to claim custom trophies.
Tax-themed costumes brightened the room, with Adjunct Professor Joni Walser joining in by wearing a mystery outfit that students could identify for prizes. The day concluded with a trivia competition covering everything from the current Treasury Secretary to historical tax rates and state income tax policies.

“UNC has a rich tradition of educating the next generation of tax lawyers, which is supported by a deep alumni community, the generous support of the law school, and a strong belief in the importance of the tax system,” said Professors Kathleen DeLaney Thomas and Leigh Osofsky, who co-organized the event. “The UNC Tax Law Program emphasizes not just achievement and service, but also adopts a student-friendly, engaging approach. The Tax Day event emphasizes all of these values by drawing the community into a fun celebration of the nation’s Tax Day.”
The celebration, now expected to be a regular tradition at Carolina Law, transforms what many consider a dreaded deadline into an educational experience that builds both professional knowledge and community among future tax leaders.
