Biography

Graham Steele joined the Carolina Law faculty in July 2026 as an Assistant Professor of Law and Deputy Director of the Center for Banking and Finance. His teaching and research focuses on banking and financial law, corporate law, and commercial law. His work has appeared in the Yale Law Journal, the University of Colorado Law Review, the George Mason Law Review, the Stanford Journal of Law, Economics & Business, the University of Chicago Business Law Journal, the Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Bloomberg Opinion, and American Banker, among others. Prior to joining Carolina Law, Steele spent nearly two decades working at the highest levels of law and policy in Washington, D.C. From November 2021 until January 2024, he served as the Assistant Secretary for Financial Institutions at the U.S. Department of the Treasury. In that role, he was the recipient of the Treasury Medal in recognition of accomplishments and leadership that demonstrate the highest standards of and dedication to public service. From 2015 to 2017, Steele was the Minority Chief Counsel for the United States Senate Committee on Banking, Housing & Urban Affairs. From 2010 to 2015 he was a Legislative Assistant for United States Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH), handling the Senator’s work as a member of the Senate Banking Committee. Steele has also served as a member of the staff of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. He received his bachelors’ degree in political science from the University of Rochester and his law degree from The George Washington University Law School.
