Give the Gift of Stock

A great way to make your commitment is with a gift of appreciated securities. In addition to receiving the benefits of a charitable deduction, upon consulting with your financial advisor, you may find gifts of appreciated securities can be a tax savvy way to make your philanthropic commitment.

Follow this simple three-step process to make a gift of stock from your investment account:

Step 1: Transfer Stock

Provide your broker with the following information for transferring securities (for DTC eligible securities – Common Stock and Mutual Fund shares).

If the shares you want to transfer are in the form of certificates, please see the following instructions.

Step 2: Notify UNC of Incoming Stock

Stock gifts arrive to the UNC-Chapel Hill account without any identification. To ensure your gift is properly directed, please email Kwasi Covington, cash & stock account manager, at 919-962-8189 or kwasi.covington@unc.edu and provide the following information:

Donor name
Name of stock
Stock symbol
Number of shares
Originating broker
Designation of gift (i.e. Law Annual Fund or law fund of choice)
Your e-mail will allow us to match your name with the correct stock gift.

Step 3: Confirm Transfer

Request that your broker contact Kwasi Covington, cash & stock account manager, at 919-962-8189 or kwasi.covington@unc.edu to confirm that the transfer of securities is complete.

Please note that the University will be closed December 25-30 and January 1. For transactions to be complete for the calendar year end deadline, please work with your financial advisor to ensure that the gift will arrive in the UNC-Chapel Hill account on or by December 31, 2024. Please also note that mutual funds can take longer to process transfers than regular stocks.
