March 29, 2024

Are we ready for a world where artificial intelligence writes news articles, creates content, and influences public opinion? As AI continues to advance at a rapid pace, it’s crucial that we examine the legal implications of this transformative technology on the media landscape. The UNC Center for Media Law and Policy is tackling this critical issue head-on at this year’s 2024 Wade H. Hargrove Media Law and Policy Colloquium, titled “Media Law in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” on April 16, 2024, at the George Watts Hill Alumni Center from 7:00 p.m.- 8:45 p.m.

With AI’s rapid integration into various aspects of media, from content creation to distribution, it’s more important than ever to explore the legal ramifications and develop a framework that balances innovation with responsibility. The 2024 Hargrove Colloquium brings together a distinguished panel of experts to delve into the complex issues surrounding AI’s impact on copyright law, defamation and tort law, political communication, and journalism.

The event will feature renowned speakers such as David McCraw, deputy general counsel at The New York Times and author of “Truth in Our Times: Inside the Fight for Press Freedom in the Age of Alternative Facts,” and Ruth Okediji from Harvard Law School, who served as a member of the National Academies’ Board on Science, Technology and Policy Committee on the Impact of Copyright Policy on Innovation in the Digital Era. Other panelists include Nadine Farid Johnson, Policy Director at the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, and Lyrissa Lidsky, Raymond & Miriam Ehrlich Chair in U.S. Constitutional Law at the University of Florida. The conversation will be moderated by David Ardia, Reef C. Ivey II Excellence Fund Term Professor of Law at the UNC School of Law and Co-Director of the UNC Center for Media Law and Policy.
