Meet the Newly Appointed Faculty Chairs at UNC School of Law
April 17, 2024Carolina Law is proud to announce the appointment of ten distinguished faculty members to endowed chairs. The new appointments, nominated by Dean Martin H. Binkley ’92, and approved by the Board of Trustees, recognize the exceptional contributions and achievements of the faculty members in the field of legal education and scholarship.
The newly appointed chair holders are:

- Barbara Fedders, Reef C. Ivey II Excellence Fund Term Scholar
- Deborah Gerhardt, Paul B. Eaton Distinguished Professor
- Donald Hornstein, Thomas F. Taft Distinguished Professor
- Osamudia James, Henry P. Brandis Distinguished Professor
- Joseph Kennedy, Willie Person Mangum Distinguished Professor
- Maria Savasta-Kennedy, George R. Ward Term Professor
- Rick Su, Arch T. Allen Distinguished Professor
- Kathleen Thomas, Aubrey L. Brooks Distinguished Professor
The new appointments mark a significant milestone in the careers of the 10 accomplished scholars, as they move up in the rankings of status from associate professors to their new distinguished titles. The endowed chairs not only recognize their exceptional work but also provide additional resources to support their ongoing research and teaching endeavors.
Dean Brinkley noted that recent increases in the value of the law school’s chair endowments have allowed for the designation of multiple holders for several chairs, further strengthening Carolina Law’s commitment to fostering a vibrant and diverse intellectual community.
